A new Godzilla movie came out on the big screen in Japan and he made is way for 3 days in Montreal.

Who is Godzilla?

He is a monster with a prehistoric appearance that was born in 1954 in Japan. At first he was just a man in a robber suit. He made many films, video games and in 2015 he was named Tourism Ambassador of Tokyo and you can find a bust of him in the heart Shinjuku. When we think about Japanese movies, we think Godzilla!

In the 2016 version the man in the robber suit was replace by made special effects and CGI. The film directed by  Shinji Higuchi and written by Hideaki Anno. The film begins with the Coast Guard investigating a yacht that was abandoned in Tokyo Bay. Soon the ship is attacked by something,  not long after the tunnel bridge Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line is flooded and collapsed. Then  viral videos on the internet of a monster that is destroying the region appears on internet. A meeting of politicians is then set up to find ways to ensure the safety of residents and the city of Tokyo. A military attack is then put in place, but is a failure and Godzilla starts to mutate again, his skin and his legs seem longer. Godzilla then returns to Tokyo Bay.

Upon his return, Godzilla is now twice the size he was before and destroys the region of Kamakura and heads to Tokyo. Following an exchange of information with the US, they offer Japanese bombing Godzilla. This will then result to upset Godzilla even more and he begins to destroy the city using atomic rays coming out of his mouth and his spines. After depleting its energy, Godzilla enters a dormant state and becomes immobile.

The United Nations with headed by the US government,  then want to ensure the destruction of Godzilla to prevent the possibility that he moves to the US coast notify Japan they will deploy a thermonuclear attack to defeat Godzilla. Japan managed to convince some of its allies in order to gain time to finish preparing a plan they call « coagulant » that will serve to freeze Godzilla.

The film is moving fast, we see Godzilla quickly, there is a lot of action, but also a lot of dialogue. There are also many characters. For Godzilla, the monster, the way they have done the design, there was many thing I really didn’t like about it. His first look when he came out of the water, really ugly and unrecognizable. Following his mutation, he was more easy to recognize, but why could he send atomic radiation from his tail and dorsal spines ?? From his mouth, I can understand, but for the rest it was too much. I was happy that the Americans were moved aside of their usual position of hero. I also enjoyed that the explained why they didn’t want a nuclear bomb dropped on Tokyo by making the link with the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Seeing places I visited being destroyed by Godzilla  was hard for me, but I was entertained by the film.

Fun fact about Godzilla his height in that movie is 118.5 meters which make him the largest Godzilla to date.

I give 7/10 Mr. Godzilla the Ambassador.
